Important limits of home improvement calculators, cost estimates and project planning information.

Estimates are not fixed prices

Fix Cost Atlas calculators turn measurements and user-entered rates into estimated material quantities or budgets. They cannot determine the actual price charged by a contractor, the condition of a property or the cost of supplies available on a particular day. Local labor conditions, project accessibility, structural repairs, waste requirements, taxes, delivery charges and permit fees can all change a final price.

Check measurements and quantities

Square footage, linear footage, volume, package rounding and coverage calculations are based on the values entered and the formula stated for the selected tool. Measurements taken from drawings or approximate dimensions may not match the finished site. Product instructions can specify different coverage rates, overlap, fastening, waste or application methods. Recheck each quantity against the specific product and actual work area before purchasing materials.

Professional safety and compliance

Concrete foundations, roofing structures, electrical panels, HVAC equipment, plumbing and other building systems can involve significant safety risks and local code requirements. Calculator results are not structural designs, load calculations, engineering approvals, energy-code certifications or permit guidance. Where required, use licensed or otherwise appropriately qualified professionals and follow current product instructions and local requirements.

Cost input responsibility

Where a tool requests prices for materials, labor, removal or other work, those values must come from information appropriate to the project. A zero rate may produce a quantity estimate without a complete cost estimate. A worked example is an illustration of mathematics, not a statement that a contractor or supplier offers the example price. Distinguish firm quotations from allowances and uncertain amounts when interpreting a total.

Independent decisions

Before signing a contract or placing an order, confirm the project scope, product specifications, warranties, safety requirements, contractor credentials and final written price. We aim to correct reported errors but cannot guarantee that every tool captures unusual conditions. A mathematical result does not replace an on-site assessment.

If you find a misleading assumption or apparent formula error, send the calculator name and example inputs using our contact details.
