Calculate supply-pipe purchases and any associated trenching
A new water supply line may run partly underground and partly through an accessible building space. Its total installed length can therefore exceed the length that needs excavation. The calculator records these separately, which prevents a purely interior or exposed section from being charged for trench digging. Enter the route length from the approved plumbing plan, the supplied coil or stock-piece length, and an allowance for cuts and turns.
Purchased pipe is rounded up to whole coils or stock lengths. For example, a route slightly shorter than one complete coil might require another coil once allowances are applied. A shorter listed stock size may sometimes produce less leftover pipe, but actual suitability depends on the pipe material, permitted joints and the supplier's packaging. This calculator does not choose a water-service material or diameter, and it should not be used to infer required burial depth.
Water supply material and excavation formulas
Purchased pipe length = stock pieces × coil length
Trench volume (cu yd) = excavated route length × (trench width in inches ÷ 12) × trench depth ÷ 27
Budget subtotal = purchased pipe price + excavation + connection assemblies + installation labor + other work
The pipe quantity is costed at the entered price per purchased foot, while installation labor follows actual installed route length. A plumber may instead provide one inclusive material-and-labor price; in that case, use the relevant allowance field without repeating the inclusive amount in other rate inputs. Pressure testing, backfill, pavement reinstatement and any utility connection fee belong in the quoted additional-work field if they are not covered elsewhere.
Worked example: one supply-line replacement
Suppose the installed route measures 95 feet, with an 80-foot excavated portion. A 100-foot coil with 5% allowance requires ceiling(99.75 ÷ 100), or one coil. A trench 18 inches wide and 3 feet deep has a nominal excavation of 80 × 1.5 × 3 ÷ 27, or 13.33 cubic yards.
At a hypothetical $4 per purchased foot and $45 per cubic yard of excavation, those components would be $400 and $600 respectively. Two connection assemblies, installation labor and other work would be entered separately using actual quotations. The values demonstrate the arithmetic, not typical market pricing.
Boundary conditions for a water-service budget
Water-service scope depends on where responsibility transfers between the utility and the property owner. Meter location, service valves, backflow requirements, local freeze depth, crossings beneath hardscape and existing underground infrastructure can all affect cost. Utility marks and permit requirements must be addressed before excavation; a numeric model cannot identify buried electrical, gas or communications services.
This model deliberately avoids assigning a universal pipe diameter or minimum burial depth. Those decisions depend on demand, pressure, locally approved materials and jurisdiction. The entered route is a measurement assumption, while safe installation and commissioning require qualified plumbing and utility personnel.
Water supply line questions
Why can excavated length be shorter than pipe length?
The new pipe may pass through a basement or service room before reaching the buried outdoor section. Only the portion that needs excavation should enter the trench-length field. The calculator rejects trench lengths greater than the installed pipe route to catch inconsistent inputs.
Does this calculate pipe diameter or pressure loss?
No. Material quantities and cost estimates require an already specified pipe size. Flow rate, fixture demand, pressure loss and approved pipe types require separate plumbing design, especially when replacing the service connection to a municipal supply.
What if the supplier sells pipe by the foot instead of a coil?
Enter the relevant stock quantity based on the supplier's minimum sellable length. Where custom lengths can be purchased with no minimum increment, the method may overstate material if an artificial coil length is used. Ask the supplier how they price partial lengths and connections.
