Estimate a stair lift from the measured rail route
A stair lift quotation begins with the route the carriage will travel, not the vertical height between floors. Measure the sloping length of the proposed rail path along the stairs, then ask the supplier whether the design uses prefabricated straight sections or a custom-built track. The section calculator is intended for systems where the vendor quotes discrete lengths. It rounds the requested rail length up to whole stock sections, so it is possible to purchase more rail than the measured distance. Turns have a separate allowance because curved tracks, transitions and complex landings can require a different manufacturing and installation process from a straight rail.
The lift carriage, mounting hardware, power supply, structural fixings and survey are not determined by rail length alone. A measured flight may have obstructions near a landing or insufficient clearance for a particular seat and carriage. Those decisions belong to the lift provider's survey rather than to an arithmetic calculator. Enter the equipment and installation prices from the same supplier scope to avoid counting a rail component twice if a package quotation already includes it.
Track purchase and cost formulas
Complete sections = round up (required rail length ÷ section length)
Purchased rail length = sections × section length
Subtotal = sections × section price + carriage quote + turns × turn price + installation + electrical work + survey
Budget = subtotal × (1 + contingency % ÷ 100)
Example: a straight stair run
For a measured run of 19 feet and a 5% allowance, the required length is 19.95 feet. A supplier using 8-foot stock sections would need three complete sections, totaling 24 feet. If each section is quoted at $240, the track component is $720. A $3,200 carriage, $900 installation, $180 power outlet and $150 survey yield a $5,150 subtotal without any turns. A 10% reserve brings the planning budget to $5,665.
This example assumes a supplier genuinely sells the required track in 8-foot sections. A curved staircase generally calls for individually surveyed and manufactured rail geometry; using straight-section arithmetic for that proposal would not produce a trustworthy quantity.
What a stair lift installation quotation should distinguish
A carriage quote should say whether it includes the seat, drive, controls, batteries, charging points and any folding or powered features. Installation should specify mounting, commissioning, operator instruction and removal of packaging. If the stairs are especially narrow, the provider may need to assess available passage width and the position of the parked chair at the upper and lower landings. Curved rails, intermediate stops, outdoor exposure and unusual transfer requirements can affect equipment selection independently of the measured rail distance.
A reputable scope also identifies warranty coverage, servicing, expected battery replacement and what happens if the user can no longer use the equipment. The planning allowance in this calculator is not a substitute for a home assessment and should not be interpreted as a statement that a staircase meets accessibility or structural requirements.
Stair lift cost questions
Should I measure the stair height or the distance along the treads?
Use the sloping rail route provided by the installer. Vertical rise alone does not describe the length of the track along a staircase, and it cannot capture upper and lower rail overrun needed for entry or exit.
Can the section calculation price a curved stair lift?
Only when the supplier has provided a confirmed section-based quotation for that system. Many curved rails are custom fabricated. Enter the complete supplier rail quotation under the appropriate equipment charge rather than interpreting straight sections as a curved-track bill of materials.
Why is the purchase length greater than the measured route?
Whole sections are rounded upward, and the selected allowance increases required length before rounding. Offcuts or unused length do not necessarily fit another installation. Verify supplied lengths and joining restrictions with the manufacturer.
