Calculate siding area after windows and doors

Siding quantities start with the external wall surfaces to be covered. Multiplying building perimeter by average wall height gives a useful first measurement for simple rectangular elevations, but triangular gables and irregular sections should be measured separately. The calculator adds measured gable area and deducts the combined square footage of windows and doors once, leaving the net installation area.

Ordering area is greater than installed area because panels must be cut around corners and openings. The calculator applies a user-selected cutting allowance and divides the result by the usable coverage per carton. It rounds up to complete cartons. Some siding is purchased by individual board, length or square instead, so enter the actual packaging coverage for the chosen product rather than treating the default quantity as universal.

Wall surface and siding carton formulas

Gross cladding area = exterior perimeter × average wall height + gable area
Net siding area = gross cladding area − openings area
Order area = net siding area × (1 + cut waste ÷ 100)
Full cartons = round up (order area ÷ usable coverage per carton)
Total budget = cartons + installation labor + removal + trim/wrap/flashing + additional quoted items + contingency

Worked example: wall and gable coverage

A house with 160 feet of measured perimeter and an average 10-foot siding height has 1,600 square feet of straight wall. Add 160 square feet of triangular gables, then subtract 220 square feet of doors and windows. Net siding coverage is 1,540 square feet.

With 10% cutting waste, the purchase allowance is 1,694 square feet. If the supplier specifies 100 square feet of usable coverage per carton, the estimate is 17 complete cartons, representing 1,700 square feet of purchased coverage. Labor and removal use 1,540 square feet, not the 1,700 square feet bought.

What to compare in a siding proposal

The siding itself is only part of the exterior wall assembly. A quote may exclude water-resistive barrier, starter strips, flashing, corners, trim boards, soffit transitions, scaffolding, disposal, repairs beneath the existing cladding and paint or sealant. Keep these exclusions visible when comparing suppliers and installers. A cost per carton cannot be directly compared with another material's cost per square foot until product coverage is normalized.

Different cladding systems have distinct attachment, clearance, fire-resistance and moisture-detailing requirements. The calculator is not a wall-assembly specification and it cannot identify rot, missing flashing or structural damage behind existing panels. Before ordering, confirm actual wall measurements and any accessory quantities with the contractor or manufacturer.

Siding quantity and cost questions

Do I subtract all windows and doors from siding area?

Subtract the measured openings from the surface being sided. Some installers calculate differently for small penetrations because trimming and flashing offset the saved material, so the purchasing allowance should still reflect the chosen product and the actual cutting pattern.

How should I measure a triangular gable?

For a straightforward triangle, multiply its base width by its vertical height and divide by two. Add the area of each gable that will receive siding rather than simply using a constant roof-pitch multiplier for every elevation.

Should siding waste increase the labor area?

Not automatically. Waste describes material purchased but not installed. The calculator applies installation and removal rates to net measured area, while purchased materials include whole cartons and the selected cutting allowance. A contractor may quote a different billing basis.
