Calculate roof sheathing from the sloped surface

Roof decking is the structural sheathing beneath the roofing underlayment and finish, often specified as plywood or oriented strand board. Its material requirement follows the actual sloping roof surface, not the flat footprint of the building. This calculator adjusts the measured horizontal roof area for pitch, applies a cutting allowance and rounds the order to complete sheathing sheets of the dimensions entered.

The model assumes a roof with a consistent pitch or that the area entered represents sections using the same pitch. Dormers, hips, valleys and areas with different slopes should be calculated separately and then combined. Structural thickness and panel span ratings are not inferred from the calculator inputs; these follow engineered or code-compliant sheathing requirements for the roof framing and expected loads.

Roof decking area and sheet formulas

Pitch factor = √[12² + pitch rise²] ÷ 12
Actual roof surface (sq ft) = horizontal roof area × pitch factor
Ordering area = roof surface × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
Whole sheets = round up (ordering area ÷ sheet length ÷ sheet width)

The input for pitch is the number of inches of rise per 12 inches of horizontal run. Sheet cost uses the number of complete panels purchased, while labor uses actual roof surface, since cut waste does not create more roof to cover. Additional framing repairs, sheathing disposal, fastening hardware and edge details should be quoted separately when they are not part of the labor rate.

Worked example: a 1,500-square-foot roof footprint

A 1,500-square-foot horizontal roof footprint with a 6-in-12 pitch has a slope factor of approximately 1.1180. The surface area is about 1,677.05 square feet. Adding 10% cutting allowance produces approximately 1,844.76 square feet to order.

A standard 4-by-8-foot sheet covers a nominal 32 square feet. Dividing the adjusted requirement by 32 gives about 57.65 sheets, so the preliminary purchase quantity is 58 whole sheets. The roof's framing layout, panel orientation and required expansion gaps may affect the actual takeoff.

Keep structural decking separate from roof coverings

Sheathing replacement is a different cost scope from purchasing shingles, metal panels or other finished roofing. A roof replacement quote may already include a specified number of sheathing sheets and the labor to install them. Before adding this calculator's budget to a broader roofing estimate, check whether decking removal, plywood or OSB supply, structural repairs and fastening are already included. Counting the same sheathing work twice will overstate the project budget.

Roof work requires fall protection and an assessment of damaged framing. Existing rot, insufficient support, or changes to snow and wind loading may require professional evaluation. This tool can quantify sheets for an agreed design but does not establish the necessary panel rating or authorize structural changes.

Roof decking questions

Is roof decking the same as underlayment?

No. Decking is the sheet material attached to the roof framing, while underlayment is applied over the decking as part of the roofing system. The sheet count here applies to structural sheathing, not rolls of underlayment or bundles of shingles.

Why does pitch increase the sheet order?

A sloped roof has more surface area than its horizontal projection. The pitch factor calculates that difference for a constant roof slope. For roofs with multiple slopes, measure and compute each plane separately to reduce errors.

Can I use the calculator to choose plywood thickness?

No. Thickness, grade, span rating and fastening depend on framing spacing, roof loads and local requirements. Use the specified panel product and manufacturer or engineer recommendations, then enter its actual sheet dimensions and quoted cost.
